"I’m a little confused, I have a 88hp motor I’m in the process of installing the electrical, however in accordance with the manual it appears the timing base go on only one way, however looking at the electrical for the timing how does the system know what cylinder is next to fire, on a car you have a distributor and cam, is the timing base in sections “how do it know”"

"Hi Paul,
an outboard ignition is very different from a car. There are three different parts to the stator. There is the 12V coil which powers the regulater/rectifier to charge the battery and run the lights, tach, etc. The ignition system is completely seperate. The second section is the charge coil. This provides voltage to the ignition power packs. The third section is the trigger coils. These are what tell which cylinder to fire. As the magnet passes the trigger, it signals the CDI pack to discharge through the proper ignition coil to fire the plug. The pack is then re-charged by the charge coil before it is required to fire the next cylinder it serves."
