My Merc 888 has a braided tube threaded into the oil vent port connected to a container mounted on my transom inside my boat. Are there any pros and cons about that set up or should I just go back with a plug and forget the container? None of the descriptions in my Mercruiser repair manual show the extra reservoir. I've noticed that when it gets warmed up good the gear lube backs up into the reservoir as if it expands. Would that cause pressure inside the gear case and drive housing if I simply plugged the hole? What should I do?
