88 omc cobra from bayliner capri, difficult?

Hello, I am new to the boating world so any advice is helpful. I have 1988 bayliner capri with a 3 liter omc cobra and it knocks, I had heard that the lower unit had to be removed in order to pull the engine. wondering if that is true? and how difficult that would be. Thanks for any advice.
