Bought a 88' Starcraft SF16 last June with the Classic 50/ 45 HP (2 stroke) motor. It runs strong after its started but often acts as if its starving for fuel when trying to start it. Boat has an inboard fuel tank and we pre-mix fuel before it goes in the tank. Doesn't seem to matter whether its been running or if its cold start, sometimes it just cranks and cranks and cranks until it sounds like its about to speed up and then it fires. Boat seems to run all day at 5200 rpm (topped out) and about 26 mph. There is something which i believe is unique to the set up however. In addition to the previous owner removing the auto oiler there are three in-line fuel filters. One as the fuel lines leaves the transom before the priming bulb, one between the motor and priming bulb and one inside the motor cowling on the port side of the motor. I am aware that fuel lines can break down from the inside out and to my knowledge they haven't been replaced. Changing out spark plugs helped a lot but the behavior is still there. Could the three in-line filters be effectively starving my motor when starting?
