"I just bought an 83 Wellcratf

"I just bought an 83 Wellcratf 19ft SunHatch with an 88 Black Max 200hp on the back, at least I was told it was an 88. The sn # is 6287903, no letters fore or aft. Where can I get an owners manual/service manual for this engine? Is the fuel/oil mix 50:1? Does synthetic oil really make that much difference in an engine this old or is it a good idea? I've had I/Os all my life and this is my first outie.....Thanks guys."

"That serial would make it a 1

"That serial would make it a 1983 model - so probably original to the rig.

50:1 is correct for the oil mix, however, these models may have been oil injected (unless removed) - something to check out, just look for a resevoir under the hood.

Owners manuals/service manuals may still be available from Merc, check a local dealer. Alternately a Seloc's manual is a great alternative for general maintenance and care.

Personally I don't believe that the sythetic oil is worth the money - unlike a 4 stroke, you are burning up all your oil with ignition, and on a motor this size you will go through a fair bit of oil if you use it often.

Any TCW-3 rated marine oil should work fine for you and keep oil costs down compared to running sythetic - gas is expensive enough and this baby will guzzle it if you open it up

"Oil injected? wow...I'll

"Oil injected? wow...I'll have to look for the resevoir...thanks for the info, I'm sure there will be more questions soon."

"Maybe not, my parts manual is

"Maybe not, my parts manual is combined thing for 79 on models and doesn't specify the year that they started the oil injection - but definately have a look"

Thanks Bandit - will make note

Thanks Bandit - will make note - have the combined parts manual for this model and it doesn't specify the years...

"Been tinkering with it this evening...no oil injection...new question tho, right above the carbs is a flat black box with 3 wires coming out to the side of the engine (red, white, black I think), is this the ignition module? One wire is kinda corroded in the middle so I know it will need replacing, just not sure what it is. I will be getting a Seloc manual this weekend for it."

No that is not a ign module. T

No that is not a ign module. That is known as an idle stablizer. (It may have had a high speed spark retard in is as well.) That turns on a ~500 RPM to catch is from stalling out by advancing the spark a little. That was put there to help with radical pitch props on light fast hulls when the motor drops in gear at idle and decel. That is not absolutly necessary that it works. Most of the time I just remove it. (And re-time the motor to run with out it if need be.) I doubt that still works at this point anyway. I usually do not bother to replace it. Most boats do not need it. They went bad all the time anyway and caused running problems. So did other parts of that ign. system. Frequently. That is a very common problem.
The ign. system has two switch boxes stacked up on one side with a mob of wiring coming out from the flywheel. That system is similar to a lawn-mower magneto ign. It does not need battery juice to work. The battery just cranks the starter. It powers itself via the stator. The Clymer/Seloc really sux. See if you can get the Merc one from the factory. Is has a ton's more info in it. Especally how the carburators go back together. The fuel jets inside may be a different size on every cylinder. Just stuff to know.
