88 60hp VRO outboard overheating?

Hello , i had a runaway problem awhile back and after that incident it seems that the engine is over heating. Symptoms are that it starts up fine , after about a few minutes of running with the muffs the stream gets real hot and starts to spray and sputter , also the engine seems hot as well. It then shuts off and wont restart until it cools down. Now when the runaway happened , the muffs walked out of position and the engine ran at full throttle with no water for at least 30-60 seconds. My uneducated guess is that the water pump is shot. Im thinking new water pump kit and thermostat's. any other ideas would be much appreciated . thx in advance

I would take a compression test. If any difference at all probably pull the head. If the motor has locked up & had to wait for cool down to free up it probably has some cylinder/piston damage. Hopefully not, but you will be chasing a basic problem if it is. Yes at least a water pump & check thermostat.

thx for the quick reply , the motor doesn't size , just shuts off , i can still crank it , just wont restart till it cools down. I also did a compression test and i got 110lb ,112lb, and 110lbs. so hopefully no damage in motor. i will be checking the thermostat, as soon as i figure out where it is. Ive got s lot of experience on old cars but none on boat motors. Also forgot to mention , im getting some oil dripping out of the prop area. Is this because of the overheating?

just checked thermostat , its seems ok opening up at about 160

Oil dripping out of prop is normal,It's unburned fuel and 2 cycle oil. When electronic components get overheated they have a tendency to break down, thus causing a no start condition.
