88 15ho evinrude dies in gear, HELP!

I have a 88 15 hp 2 stroke motor, last time I took it out, my buddy was guiding me in through some sloughs and I ran it into some black mud and the motor instantly died. It will not stay running in gear now. It runs and revs just fine in neutral but dies when I shift. If if I rev it high and shift, it will push the boat for about 30 seconds then just dies again. Carb was freshly cleaned with a new fuel pump with new spark plugs. I've taken the gear case apart and don't see any broken parts, any ideas??

Inspect fuel pump.----Test run with another tank and hose.-----Possibly running on just 1 cylinder.----Compression test is a good idea too.

Great, I will try that. I will be putting the lower unit back together hopefully this weekend, is there anything in there that could cause such problems that I should double check?

The gearcase is completely sealed and mud can not get in there.----Perhaps check the flywheel key.
