"I have a 87 Campion Delta 150

"I have a 87 Campion Delta 150 14ft bowrider with a 60 hp 87 evinrude elec tilt motor that I recently bought(as is $1500 with trailer) and have been with Graham Lamb's help prepareing for the water. Compression is 119,120,121, spark is strong, removed the VRO and have a new impeller ordered, but as I was testing the motor I discovered the steering cable ( worm gear type) siezed

and as I was removing it I discovered that I could not fully withdraw the control end from the engine pivot. The hole in the bulkhead that the cable comes from the front of the boat is offset from the motot pivot. there is not enough clearance to fully pull it out before it contacts the bulkhead. So.......my questions are
1. the VRO has a black, white, tan, and purple wire coming from it.Which do I disconnect to stop the oil low alarm?
2.Do I have to lift the motor off to remove the steering cable and,
3. is there a way to un sieze the cable
Sorry for the long post and I know the steering cable is not a motor question but this site has some knowledgable people on it so.....

"I think is not a wise move to

"I think is not a wise move to play with steering cables. If they are seized due to age or corrosion, just buy a new one and when trailering the boat, hide the portion of shaft that runs inside the pivot of engine to minimize water inlet or lack of grease on it. Remember, that worm cable is one of the most important parts we should take care, if they snap in silence, a disaster can take place. I think you do not need to lift the engine to remove the steering cable and for the vro, try to disconnect the cable."

"As Mr. Whaler stated the cabl

"As Mr. Whaler stated the cable is nothing to play with. If it is not moving free replace it and the helm as well if it has any problems.
As for the need to lift the motor to remove the cable I have seen boats that this must be done in order to have enough room to slide the cable out. Some models a guy could get away with just tilting the motor up on one side, a lot had to do with how the stern was designed.

Have fun."

"Daryl, if you are going to go

"Daryl, if you are going to go with a new steering system, order it from the States - even with the duty etc, it's less than half price.

I have been using Teleflex "Rack" steering systems on recent installs - really nice steering and been getting the whole set-up for well under 100 bucks (going for 200+tax up here).

Or pick one up on Ebay - some good deals there too.

You should be able to change the steering without removing the motor. It's just a 60 horse and should have a standard (through the tilt tube) configuration.

Hey, also noticed you updated your profile - you in the airforce?"

"Thanx guys for the tips. I go

"Thanx guys for the tips. I got a new cable locally and $126 was not to bad and I did have to lift the motor off to get the end out. Lucky I have a chain hoist in the barn. Impeller went in without to much trouble....tricky way to release the shift rod linkage. I disconnected the elec. for the VRO and put it in the water on Saturday and she fired up after 3rd crank!

WOW!! I am so pleased with how it runs. No problems at all after three trips now!! Purrs like a kitten and roars accross the lake at 3/4 throttle, thought it would be fast but not that fast!! No speedo so I'm not sure how fast. FAST enough!!. Thanx again for the responses. And yes Graham 22yrs service, 19 in Cold Lake now and counting."
