When I go to the lake for the weekend the first day my 87 rude runs great. The next days after that there seems to be a problem with motor. When I first fire it up and take off it seems to be running on 1 or 2 cyl. I can hear the other cyl trying to kick in and can feel the power for a split second. After about five min it kicks in and runs great the rest of the day even after sitting for a few hours. Stumped in MO.

p.s. first time user. Good stuff in here

welcome to marineengine!!

do you have a water/fuel separator?

plugs look good?

do you use fuel stabilizer?

I do have a inline fuel filter

I do have a inline fuel filter which I replaced last summer. The spark plugs are new. I didn't put stabilizer in fuel but the fuel is fresh. Ran several tanks through it a couple weekends ago. It does sound like a water in the fuel issue now that you mention it.

"These engines rarly misses the way You describe it in the ignition system.
You most likely have a carb issue. Check Your plugs, and You will find the one 'out'. The tear down."

"You think running some carb cleaner through it might resolve this problem? Plugs look fine, what gets me is that you can hear the cyl wanting to kick in and then it finaly does kick in after about 3-5 min and runs great the rest of the day."

"My guess is that one of Your carbs has problem to 'start' the high speed system. It may be related to the intermediate system, it may be related to the carb itself.
I would just have taken them all down and given them a good clean.
The anger about carb cleaners are that they may dissolve debris which stays in the float bowls and make things worse.
The only safe way is to dismantle. Take notice that the carb cover/intake box has 'fresh' gaskets as well."

I ran some Lucus fuel treatmen

I ran some Lucus fuel treatment through it last weekend. Going to Table Rock Lake MO next weekend and if problem continues i'll have to dismantle and go from there. Thanks for the info

Mark you need to isolate the problem to electrical or fuel.

This problem can be very hard to isolate. A good inductive tachometer (fluke 88 is recommended) can be used to compare RPM on all cylinders up through wide open throttle. A big difference on one or two cylinders indicates a problem

I just hooked up the tach this

I just hooked up the tach this week. There was one on it but I had never hooked it up before now. Im also thinking it's a electrical or fuel problem as well. You think a coil could be going out?? Not sure what to try next but start replacing stuff $$$.. Thanks Jamie

"look at your coils,if any are

"look at your coils,if any are cracked, repl those...do a compression test..tell us what it is,..spark test....if all is well,on to carbs,...and since it runs great at times,i suspect a carb problem or bad fuel pump,an arcing coil will do the same thing....so,ck all the above and see where u r."

jwbmarine thanks for the info.

jwbmarine thanks for the info. I'll give those a try and let ya know. Thanks again Also I just ordered a gasket that goes between the silencer and carbs. Noticed it was leaking fuel/oil

Just to let everyone know that

Just to let everyone know that replyed running 2 tanks with lucas fuel treatment solved my problem... Didnt have any problems after running it through.... Thanks to all...
