"I have an 87 Johnson 60hp which, usually starts right up and is now slow to start, then it stalls or boggs when I try to accelerate. Based on what I have read here is sounds like a carb problem, but what should I check in the ignition before I change the fuel lines and go after the carbs? Also, I know the carbs are not original, they are from an earlier year, so how can I get the right kits to rebuild them?"

if you have a good blue spark

if you have a good blue spark with a good snap you should be good........ if it will jump a 1/4-7/16" gap you should be really fine.

sounds like you may be a victim of ethanol. you need to replace ALL your old fuel lines with an alchohol safe fuel line....... the new crap (gas) they sell now has been reeking havoc on old fuel lines. the insides start to gel or if old may start to break up and enter your carb.

a different year carb may or may not have the same jets. #s off the carbs may help identify the year.

"Thanks for the input Dave! I usually, ground the plugs to look for spark, is it better to pull the wire and see if the spark can jump a gap to ground? I seem to recall reading on one of the posts (joeR) were you need to pull the plugs to get the rmp up to 3000 to initiate the ignition system. What exact steps would you recomend to confirm good spark on all theee cyl?"

"yes you want to pull the wire

"yes you want to pull the wire off the plug and pull the plugs out....... your eng needs 300 to fire but with plugs out you are sure to get 300 easily.

you can get a cheap one from the parts store or you can build one with some nails, wire, and a piece of wood."

"Thank You David, the spark checked out ok on all three cyl. Now I need to find carb kits for carbs that are not original to motor. Threre was a tab on the center carb that reads
395 578A
65 70 MX
1 K J
and the casting on the carbs is J330943
Can anyone help?"
