Fuel system got gunk and water.

Then your idle circuit is clogged up.

Start at the carb there is a filter in the fitting that enters the carb.

Work backwards you may have a filter in the fuel pump.

The pull the fuel pickup tube and the anti sypin valve will come up with it bolow thru it and make sure it clean.

The you can crank the trailer up the bow and suck the gunk and water off the bottom of the back corner of the tank.

Me i would then rebuild the carb.

When you open it you will see in the bowl the gunk and water on the bottom.
 
The Merc is a copy of the Rochester actually uses 99 percent of the same gaskets and such.

Actually when i think of it, the 2cg rebuild kit has all the components to rebuild the merc one also.

I think it may, but to be safe buy the Merc rebuild kit. At the top of this page is the link to buy the part here.

Now to your question whats a better carb. ?

The merc has one screw to adjust, the mounting of the carb, of a merc without a adapter plate will fit your mani.

You can mount a rochester but you will need a adapter plate.

My opinion, stay with what you have.

Look closely at the one adjustment screw. See a hole next to it with a plug ?
