I just recently purchased a boat that I have had to do some work on. I think I have reached the point where I can start it up. Here's the question - I have seen plenty of boats that have a hook up for a hose or something similar but there is nothing like this on the stern drive is it safe to start it up in my driveway without water hooked up?

In case you can't tell I'm brand spankin' new to boats so any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

"Never start the engine without a water source. What you're looking for are commonly know as "flush muffs", and clamp around the lower unit where you see the water intake (kind of looks like the gills on a fish). You attach your water hose to that. You don't want to operate the engine over about 2000 RPM with the muffs, because they don't provide enough water for much higher than that."
