"I've managed to punch a 1

"I've managed to punch a 1/2" hole in the tip of my lower unit on the propeller shaft housing cone. Unfortunately, I didn't see the hole when I initially inspected it in the water and ran for about 6-8 hours after hitting the rocks.

The good news is the 3.0L ran better than it ever has.(had some bogging issues at around 4000 rpm since I bought the boat last year but I'll leave that for another thread).

Anyways, I had no issues as a result of the hole but figured I must have lost all the gear oil, after looking at the exploded view drawing I figure the bearings may have held most of the oil in but I'm guessing I will find water in the oil when I drain it.

I guess at this point, I'm looking for some words of wisdom on what to look for when I pull the lower unit off.

I have a decent mechanical background but no special tools or in depth marine repair experience. Correct me if I'm wrong but I figure my best bet is to pull the lower unit and take it to a marine mechanic for dis-assembly and inspection, I could then tig the housing to repair it and have the mechanic reassemble it.

Thanks in advance for any feedback or suggestions.

Scott"
