86 mercury L6 115 seems to be excessive upper driveshaft bearing play

I have pulled off the remaining large plastic "washer" that fits inside of the rest of the water pump base. Was planning on installing a new water pump base kit; the driveshaft has quite a bit of play for and aft, and something I think is reasonable in and out. My manual mentions nothing about this, does it sound normal or does it sound like there some other problem here that has caused the seal to fail? Thanks in advance for any/all advice,

If you notice quite a bit of play (with the roller bearing installed just beneath the water pump) I would suspect that bearing or the driveshaft.

Thanks for the reply, Is there some type of tolerance w/ this bearing ? I find it hard to believe that it was once tight and is now this loose. My manual only has tolerances for gear-lash.
