'86 merc 60 prop shaft has marks, fix?

Replacing the seals on my propeller shaft. The shaft is worn in that area, has 3 or 4 barely visible scratches running lengthwise on the shaft. Also shows shiny where the seals contact the shaft. Can I sand it with 400 grit emery cloth and fix it, or is it done?

I had some steel wool, sat there for an hour spinning the shaft while holding it with steel wool and grease. Marks are gone. Installed, assembled, no leaks evident for 20 seconds at 12 pounds air pressure. DONE.
