I just got a 86 grummen with a 120 merc strendrive. It ran for a while but now there is too much gas getting in the carb. There is a steel fuel line and a rubber hose and the gas coming from the rubber hose is flooding the motor. I had to squeeze that hose off to get off the lake last night. Is this a problem with the carb of fuel pump?

"where exactly is the hose ? a

"where exactly is the hose ? and what condition is the hose in, maybe its time to replace it"

"The small hose goes from the bottom side of the fuel pump to the very top of the carb. when I turn over the engine, every turn gas pumps out of that small hose. I pulled the pump and it will shoot gas from both that oriface and the mail fuel line. The gas from the main will shoot out a few feet.
The hase seems to be fine, not leaking and still soft and flexible."

That hose should be dry. It indicates you have a blown diaphragm in your fuel pump.

"Thanks I actually already knee jerked to fuel pump but so many people were telling me carb, your floats are stuck and I couldn't accept that. I had my girlfreind pick it up from the store and theu gave her the wrong one. Now I have the old one off and hopefully they will have one the right one in stock."

"as bert said, the pump diaphram went bad.

the purpose of that hose is to tell you just that, and not let any fuel into the bilge, which is why you use a marine fuel pump as the auto ones don't have the port to connect the hose."

Myself I'd wait for the pump to come In new parts, valves etc. IIRC the diaphragm needs to be riveted to the lever, may need a special tool.

"Well I got the rebuild kit.

"Well I got the rebuild kit. It isn't too hard to do. The only road block I have found is getting the pin out that woulds the lever. Any ideas how to remove the pin. I have removed the brass cap that holds it in but I cannot seem to get the pin far enough out to grab it.
With the GF's help I got it out.

thanks everyone. Now I can try and start the boat again."
