"I would like to replace my merc 170/470 with another motor. Does anyone know what engine might work instead? ( Motor Mounts, horsepower equivelent, etc. )"

What are you looking to achieve ?
What model Out Drive is on the back of it ?
Do you know your final drive ratio is ?

Bear in mind anything is possible and is generally only limited by the size of your wallet.

"Thanks Peter, I am trying to replace the 470 with a comparable engine of horsepower. I have had lots of problems with the 470. Overheating, water in the oil, ( head gasket replacement and other trouble shooting methods have not worked ) looks alot like it could be a cracked block, voltage regulator issues. It has the alpha one sterndrive but I don't know the final drive ratio. I have decided to stop the bleeding from shop bills and just replace it. Thanks"

Before spending a dime more, check the transom, stringers and floor for rot--very expensive repair unless done by you.

If you want to get away from the 470 it is going to require a complete Merc. drop-in engine. I am assuming that your boat is 17.5' in length. A 4.3L w/4 bbl carb will produce 190+ hp for about $4,000. That's alot of punch. Engine mounts will need modification. OD gearing may need changed to handle it--not sure.

Maybe you should consider a reman. longblock 470 with an external alternator kit. Probably half the cost."

Guys advice is very sound, but if are not replacing apples with apples it will get costly.
I would seriously consider the remanufactured 470 longblock.
Have a close at your manifold and riser if you have had water in your old engine
(how did it get there)

You should check with

You should check with your boat manufacturer and see what optional engine packages are/were offered, This will give you a good idea what you can do that will fit.
You could drop in a 220 hp 4.3 V-6 for instance. The length will be OK, but you need to check the width dimension. Also the 4.3 will be heavier. The 4.3 is a good solid reliable engine and should treat you well.
Your drive is likely a 1.94/1.91 ratio. The 4.3 uses a 1.81 ratio normally, but you can likely make yours work with a prop with more pitch.
