86 GM/OMC engine interchange

I have a 1986 Bayliner Capri with a 5.0L 305 GM and OMC outdrive.

My dad somehow managed to mess up flushing it with coolant over the winter and both heads and the block cracked.

So my question is, what motors are interchangable with the original 5.0? Im looking for something in a more acceptable price range. We go on vacation to a lake in less than two months and dont have a working boat.

The outdrive was replaced two years ago, so we would rather fix it if its going to be cheap enough. All i see is reman engines for about $2000, plus install, alignment, etc.

Any help is appreciated.

Welcome aboard Jason my youngest sons name.

michigan motors 5.7l long block. Mani's good on old motor with risers ? Fresh water they last forever my mani is original.

Whatever you need off the 5.0 will transfer over.

Just tell them you have a 86' so they give you the same series motor.

you can get a 305, 307, 327 or 350 car/truck engine from 1968-1986, swap the core plugs to brass ones, and swap the camshaft from your 305, or buy a marine cam and lifter kit & swap it in. you'll have to swap all externals from the 305 over
If you boat in salt or brackish water, you'll want to put in nice composite head gaskets with stainless fire rings. Or if you see the edge of a composite gasket (and can tell it's not original steel) you are ok too.
Just avoid 1987 and later engines - your coupler won't fit the crankshaft.
The exception to that is the new 290HP 5.7 GM crate motors, they have the old style crank
