Hey guys, new here and looking for some help. I just bought a 1986 Evinrude 40hp tiller with electric start. The guy said it had been sitting for a while but ran when he put it away last. (Famous last words) I got it to pop over so I bought it. Got it home, my dad took the carbs off and cleaned them, they were filthy. Put them back together and it will run if I press the choke button constantly(not sure what the little electric choke thing is called on the handl.) I keep pressing it and it will run. It will rev up nice but even if I try to hold a higher rpm, it wants to die. Give it a little more throttle and it will rev up and stay then try to die. It’s more of a won’t stay running problem then a lack of idle. Took apart and cleaned the fuel pump. Not a VRO. New fuel, new tank, new line. Primer ball stays firm. The only issue was when cleaning the carb, the jet in the bottom of the bowl, a fixed jet, would not come out and stripped the brass a little on the head. The small part of it is still fine, blew it through and it’s clear so doubt that has anything to do with it. Any advice would be great. Also, what is the proper way to use the little choke button. Hold it or press it a few times? Thanks.
