86 Black Max tilt/trim

86 135hp Black Max tilt N trim (2) solenoids clicking, tested N working. Power is crossing over going to motor. Motor hooked directly to 12V, motor does it's job but wired back to solenoids, nothing. Noticed when wiring back to solenoids, when the up or down switches are activated, test light is lighting up on both buttons. In other words, light probe put on up solenoid and up OR down buttons pushed its lighting up on both buttons. Correct me if wrong but it should just light up when up button is activated, correct? Had a 3 wire motor at one time but was switched to the 2 wire. Could this be the issue? Does it have to have the 3 wire motor to function? Thanks

If it's a 2 wire motor the solenoids should be out of the picture. Those are swapped with a dual relay set up. Check your relays first. Then check your 2 circuits (low draw) and make sure they are energizing and giving power to the pin on your relay. Pretty fail proof with the exception of the relays. I would start there . You mentioned the motor worked when wired direct so that eliminates that. My money is on the relays.
