"Bayliner 86 AQ131A/275- Running rough all of a sudden.
If anyone has any ideas please respond:
I was cruising across the lake and engine began running rough then ran fine. The next time I took it out it ran very rough. I removed all gas and replaced with new gas, fuel filter had some fine debrie. Removed carburator and cleaned it. Ordered new fuel pump and spark plugs. Will put those on next week. I'm perplexed!!"

"Some possible causes: defective igniton coil, bad ground in points, defective points/condenser, spark plug wires loosing insulation. Personally, I don't think the fuel pump is the problem.

Have you consider intalling a Pertronix electronic igniton kit in your distributor? You will eliminate all "defective points" related ignition problems forever. If you search in the forum, you will see how people who upgraded from points to Pertronix feel about it."

"Just one thing I forgot to mention. Make sure that there is not gas going from the fuel pump to the carb via the plastic hose interconnecting both. If this happens, it is a signal that the pump diaphragm is perforated and the pump needs to be replaced. This does not happen very often, but it is a possibility."
