86 Alpha 1 Shift problem

I have an 1986 Mercuiser Alpha 1 that only works in reverse and neutral. The cable seems to move to the forward position but it still wont shift into gear. Is that a problem in the stern or the linkage?

In fwd do the shift shoes go in a straight line, bow to stern?
Was any work done on the drive or cable?

When was the last time it shifted properly?
Does the shifter bind at all, or does it move freely?
I would check each cable by hand at the engine by disconnecting the
cables one at a time to see if they move freely
pay close attention to your lower shift cable it is usually the first one to go.
If cables check good re install and adjust properly.
