86 30hp shift arm cable pin replacement

When attempting to take the shift cable off the motor, the end of the pin broke off. How do you get a hold of the cap lock nut behind the shift handle?
Is there a sub for a new pin that can be made?

I found a way to get it off. The lever is made out of plastic and flexible along the outside edges.
With the lever in reverse a 7/16" wrench would go between the edges and go on the nut.

I would have put a picture on but too complicated.
