850 merc lower unit problem wont shift at all

"Hello there I just got done

"Hello there I just got done replacing the water pump impeller and pump oil seals as I was getting water in the lower unit. The motor is a merc 850 early 70's model seriel number 3746605. When I took the lower unit off I shifted it into foreward gear as my repair manual says to do. Well I took the lower unit off, replaced impeller and seals put it back on the motor, had problems getting everything lined up but got it up there. Checked the shift lever and it was up to the carb and didnt want to move. Dropped the lower unit down and now the shift shaft on the lower unit turns freely and wont shift at all. Im at a loss here what could have gone wrong? It is in foreward gear."
 
Lightly put a vicegrip on the

Lightly put a vicegrip on the shiftshaft and rotate counter clockwise untill it shifts into nuetral.Assemble the thing in nuetral if you like.Put control in nuetral as well.It is all the same afterall.

"Doug, You manual should have said neutral on that model. Forward has too many(wrong) ways to reassemble."
