"new to boating and purchased

"new to boating and purchased this 85 omc w/3.0
ran for 2 hours and started sputtering out at certain throttle positions then eventually died. fuel pump is in good working order and didnt need replaced. went to the carb and did a rebuild and still wouldnt run. replaced distributor cap, points, exc. nothing! new ignition coil and starter and still wont fire. i have good voltage getting to the ignition coil but i cant get any spark from the dist. im beginning to think its some electrical problem but i dont know much about marine motors. could this have something to do with my ignition switch that would cause no spark? i dont know what else to do and i dont have a wiring diagram. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"I havn't had much to do w

"I havn't had much to do with the 3.0 as I have the 4.3, but I assume they have the shift assist module the same. Sounds to me like you might have a dodgy switch on that circuit. They are on the lever assy where the gear cable attaches to the engine. I might be totally wrong but it is a good place to start. Good luck."

"Condensers have a reletively

"Condensers have a reletively high rate of defect, brand new, right out of the box. It is would not be unheard of that your old condenser went bad or some other component went bad but you also put in new condenser that was bad."

You may have voltage on the po

You may have voltage on the positive side of the coil but was the black lead on the negative or just ground somewhere? You could have something grounding out the coil. There should be 2 gray wires and a black on the neg post. The black is from the points (distributor) one gray is from the ESA and the other for the tach. Pull the 2 grays off and try again. Look inside to make sure that black wire is insulated right to the points and not touching so that it could be grounded all the time.

my 4.3 was doing the same thin

my 4.3 was doing the same thing when I put it into gear. I found that the engine was not aligned and it was causing the shift interrupter to engage stalling the engine out. Engine would run awesome in neutral at any rpm. I have not gotten everything back together yet after changing the engine coupler. Is it possible your problem could be related?

BOB.
i am sure the wires are

BOB.
i am sure the wires are positioned properly and the ground wire from the points is on the neg side. have not yet checked to see if the wire to the points is insulated correctly but i will double check tonight. if i dont see any problems could there be any other areas to trouble-shoot?

"Disconnect the tach (grey

"Disconnect the tach (grey from coil) when testing. Quite some times I have found shorts in tachs being the main problem. Eliminate all 'outside' failure possibilities like the shift interrupt module, just pull the connectors apart."

where is the shift interrupt m

where is the shift interrupt module located? stupid question but i dont have any diagrams and this is my firdt boat.

"I don’t know if your boat has

"I don’t know if your boat has one. On mine it is located on top of the engine. There is a shift linkage that comes from the throttle/shifter, connects to the linkage on the engine and another cable runs to the outdrive. When there was pressure from putting into gear it was causing the linkage to shift and engage a switch witch would retard the engine. It would not power up in gear. Neutral was ok. Prior to this we couldn’t get the engine to run and found that almost every spark plug was bad, we put new ones in a year ago. I hope this does not confuse you because the two things may not be related to your problem. Trial by elimination."
