"85 Johnson '79 has blown

"85 Johnson '79 has blown three CDI boxes in as many years both sides- no problem prior to that. Symptom is no spark resulting in loss of power. I've moved boxes from side to side and the problem followed the boxes so I always thought it was the box. I've replaced the boxes but loose very quickly.. almost immeditately. Any ideas as to what may be causing box failure and is there a way to test the CDI box preferably while not on an engine?

With two new boxes, I now have a constant failure on port side, cylinder 3 never providing spark no matter what. I'm now leaning towards a the stator as being bad but want to get a handle on the blown CDI boxes before addressiing (if necessary) the stator."

"the first thing i do in this

"the first thing i do in this case,..is make sure,..u have no voltage on the blk yellow wire from key,...on either pack......if none,..w/key on or off,...then,u would need to go thru all the cdi ign checks...."

"Thanks for the prompt reply.

"Thanks for the prompt reply. Boat is currently at camp so I don't have access until a few weeks so, sorry if I ask some clarifing questions prior to returning. By voltage, I'm assuming some form of low DC voltage?

Also, if I get there and determine that it is the stator, should I change the time base as well?"
