85 Johnson oil retainer seal

I’ve got an 85 Johnson 25 horse that I am trying to get the oil seals behind the prop replaced. I got the rubber and spring out of the first seal but I cannot get the metal ring housing that goes around the rubber out. Just trying to make sure I’m not messing up the bearing housing. Any tips? The ring looks like it’s part of the bearing housing where it’s bent and I’m hoping I’m wrong. Is there a good tool? Considered the drywall screw trick but I’m a bit skeptical.

Pretty sure you need to pull the bearing carrier out and drive out the seal body from the opposite direction. In any case, it is critical not to nick or scratch the prop shaft where the seal lip rides.

I ended up using a standard harmonic balancer puller and used threaded 1/4-20 rods with washers and nuts to secure them to the puller, there are two 1/4” holes on the carrier and backed it straight out. Needle bearings appear to be in great shape, large o ring in back looks damaged. Thinking that was the problem the whole time. Got it back together and no leaks so far. Thank you all!
