85 johnson 50 starter gear question

Guys,why is there rubber inside the starter gear? What is the purpose? Thanks

It serves as a clutch. When they go bad the starter does everything its suppose to except turn the flywheel as fast as its suppose to. You will usually have a lot of smoke from it. Be sure to never spray any cleaner or WD40 type stuff on it.

If starter gear is spinning, replace it.
