"Hello,

I have an 85 HP Force outboard and I'm curious what year it is. The numbers on it are: Model 856x6m, serial: 2913. Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Steve"

"Hello Steve, you have a 1986 model.

If you are interested in a bit of history. Originally Force was built by the old Chrysler outboard division which was bought by Bayliner.

They had the line developed exclusively for inclusion as a package deal on their boats.

In 1986 (your model year), Bayliner was bought out by the Brunswick Corporation (who among other companies, owns Mercury).

So Force was given to Merc to incorporate into their line-up.

So although the Force motors were Chrysler parts and designs for the most part, it's a coin toss as to whether or not it was built by Merc...."

"Graham,

I just bought a Force 50 that the serial number sticker is missing from the motor bracket. Is there any other way to determine what year it is ?? It has the blue CD box and coils. So far, I've been using parts for a 1989 (water pump kit and thermostat).
Thanks."

"Rich, since alot of the Force

"Rich, since alot of the Force motors were built by Merc it's possible that they also installed a "welsh plug" on the powerhead.

It is a small silver disc about the size of a quarter and it is usually pressed into the waterjacket near the back of the powerhead (near, but forward of the sparkplugs).

I don't know for sure if Force motors have these or not, but worth a look. They contain a serial number for sure and a model number in some cases.

I will post a pic of what you are looking for. The pic is of a small Evinrude, but the Mercs are the same...
