"I have an interesting problem -

The motor will start like a champ and run well, but switching off the key will not stop the engine. The motor is a magneto type, so grounding out the magneto wires should kill the engine - but it does not. I changed the ign sw even though it tested ok, but that was not it.

I took a wire and jumpered the magneto wiring on the term strip on the LH side of the motor - she continues to run (I did have the L/U in a drum of water!). I finally sprayed choke cleaner in the intake to kill it.

What do you think? Is a magneto bad?? - the wiring to the mags (it's a white wire from the term strip to each of the mags on this motor) is not broken on either."

More than interesting. Most people post when their motor won't run. Yours just won't quit running.
Don't know that I can help. Maybe if you repost with the year and at least the model number information someone may have some ideas as ignition systems vary.

"Dave. I really appreciate the response. Actually, I can report that I found the problem!

On the CD packs there is both a black and a white wire; the black is grounded and the white goes to the term strip I described before which has a wire leaving it and going to the ignition switch. I found the black wires connected under a bolt on the metal coil/CD pack mounting plate. The plate is insulated from ground by 3 rubber shock cushions. I checked with an ohmmeter from this plate to ground and could not get a consistently good low-ohm measurement. Looking further, there is a wire that comes from the metal plate to a bolt on the engine to ground the metal plate; the bolt holding this wire was about to fall out of its hole. I tightened it and - what do you know - problem solved!

I thought a detailed explanation might help someone - you had to look around for this wire - it was tucked up under the metal plate and was not immediately visible at first glance.

Thanks again for responding - based on my experience with boat motors, I'm sure something else will come up in the (near!) future that we can discuss -

"Steve-

Assuming the battery is good (you'll want to make sure of that first), the solenoid may be worn out and not making good contact thus dropping the available voltage to the starter and reducing cranking torque. Over time the sparking that occurs on the solenoid contacts burns them up and they can't make good connection every time.

Keep me posted -
