"Hi Tim. I agree that spark on 1& 2 would indicate the stator is ok. If it's the same as my 1989 85hp Force there are 2 ignition modules: the first is for cylinders 1 & 2; the second is for cylinders 3 & 4. (The 4th cylinder is for the 125hp motor with 4 cylinders.) There is also a different trigger and coil for the 3rd cylinder. The trigger is under the flywheel with the stator. No spark could be related to any of those 3 parts: ignition module, trigger, or coil. I have the SELOC manual for Force 1984-96 motors and it gives procedures for testing for shorts in those parts and how to test each under power if you have a volt/ohm meter. I think it should be possible to use the ignition module for the 4th cylinder on the 3rd cylinder but to get the timing right you must also you also switch the trigger wires. This would be very difficult without the schematic. But, I found the schematic of the 3cylinder was wrong for my motor in the SELOC manual (wrong wire colors). I actually used the schematic for the 4 cylinder. I learned all this in the past 2 weeks while trying to get my 3rd cylinder running. Ultimately I found I DID have spark and my problem was low compression on the 3rd cylinder (see my post just 5 below yours "1989 Force 85HP - Low Compression of Cyc #3"). I'd recommending getting a manual - it'll really help."
