hi

We have a problem with our evinrude 85hp. Took it out for the first time - starts fine, runs in nuetral and when first take out runs really well. After sitting for a while and starting up again, would continually stall when putting into gear. It did this for the rest of the day. When we got it home, flushed the motor - started fine and ran in gear no problems. Im a new boatie - anyone have any suggestions, I dont know where to start.

Cases like this, always start with a compression test.
What doe the spark plugs look like?
Even light brown?
Coming from storage it might even be a case of 'fouled' carbs.
Temperature even at both sides?

85hp..... what year? If you haven't already tried pumping the fuel primer bulb up hard on the restart attempt, do so.

If no change, look closely at the stator under the flywheel. If there's obvbious cracks and/or a substance dripping down on the timer base and powrhead area, replace it. The stator is a two fold component (battery charging and required voltage to powerpack), the dripping of the substance I mentioned would result in a voltage drop to the powerpack which in turn would result in erratic, weak, and eventually no ignition (spark).

A stator in this condition might (for awhile) function normally when cold, BUT when hot (especially when sitting after shutdown) the voltage drop takes place.
