"I have an OMC Stringer 5.0 (chevy 305) with the stringer stern drive. My ball gears are all chewed up and need replaced. When i start the engine with the outdrive all the way up there is a lot of chatter and banging back at the gears, but with the outdrive down, there is no noise and it purrs like a kitten. Is this natural because the gears are all chewed up and need replaced? or is something else broken besides the gears? does anyone have any diagrams of what is in the inside of this stringer? and also how hard would it be for a car mechanic to fix this. I know alot about cars, but nothing about boats. The cheapest dealership wants 700.00 just to replace the two gears that are broken with me provideing the parts.

Let me know your thoughts? and I would be in great debt to you.

Thanks again
Scott"

First of all you never, never, never start these stringers with the drive tilted up, the tilt is only ever meant to raise it all the way up for trailering or beaching when the engine it turned off. If you must tilt it up a small amount for going through shallow water it has to be at low RPM or else you will trash those ball gears, the name says it all, ball gear, if yours are flat on one side and down around 50 % left then you do need them for sure.

Go to this link belwo for the BRP website, you can find online exploded parts catalog's, select stern drive from the pull down, then year, engine size, model and which part you want to look at, some parts can be a challenge to find but at least you'll get a good idea how things go together and then you try and get yourself a good OMC factory manual, check on ebay.

"Bob, what i was talking about

"Bob, what i was talking about, when i said the chatter etc. is that with the engine running and the motor up, (out of the water) connected to a waterhose, the chatter noise is happening, No noise with the motor down.

With that being said.. the gears definately need replaced because there is only 1 ball on the gears on 1 of 2 gears.. one gear is completely stripped of teeth and the other has only one tooth left on it..

Is this a hard thing to replace? I have a manual on the way i got from ebay. I will study it. then try it if you think this is a do it yourselfer project since I cannot find a dealer that will mess with it."

"Yes it's DIY for most, there are others on here like Hy Stat or Bud that have much more stringer experience than me and hopefully they will pop in here, I haven't had/touched a stringer since 1988 so I'm a little rusty

"Bob is most certainly right when he talks about not running the motor with the drive up. It will tear the ball gears up. It's ok to do from time to time like he mentioned (beaching the boat or getting out of swallow water) but that is it. The gears are not hard to replace, you can buy a kit on the net for 130-170 dollars depending on where you purchase them. The kit will also come with the seals, which are easy to replace. You will more than likely need an impact wrench to loosen the ball gear retaining nuts as they are probably rusted. I have heard of guys doing it without removing the drive. I for one took the drive off and feel it is the best way to accomplish this repair. I will be happy to help, if you have any questions let me know."

"Thanks Bob & Bud,
I got my manual on the way, when I get it, I am going to read it and start the project,I am sure I will have several questions to ask.

Thanks in advance

"Okay, got the parts ordered.

"Okay, got the parts ordered. I am planning to go ahead and start taking it apart before the new parts get here. Does anyone know what size the nut is holding the ball gears on with? and are these gears pressed on? or are they just tighted down on the splines?

Here is a pic of how chewed up my gears are.

"Holy sheeeeeeeeeeeit! I've never seen ball gears that wasted! Pop the tin cover off, and you will see the nut. I'm not sure what size it is off hand. You'll probably need an impact wrench to loosen it. They aren't pressed on, just rusted on. Some are pressed on but I'm pretty sure yours aren't. Spray it with penetrating oil and let it sit for while and then attempt to loosen it. Get a large vice to hold it."

something pulled it apart whil

something pulled it apart while going up river at about 4000rpm.. and when it went back together.. this was the result.

Would putting a c-clamp on it and catching it in a bind be good enough to hold the gear so that I could loosen it.. the biggest socket I had was 1"1/16 and it was too small.. maybe someone knows what size so I can pick one up at work tomorrow.

Thanks for the help bud.. your the man.
