'84 Johnson 115- replace clutch dog and gears

I need to replace the clutch dog and possibly gears. Do absolutely need to pull the lower unit in order to do this? Hopefully it's just the clutch dog that needs to be replaced.

Thanks,

Tom Smith

There are no short cuts on this job.--------Lower unit must be removed.--------Lower unit must be taken apart untill only the pinion bearing is left in the housing !

You're a racist!!! lol...

That's what I thought, just wanted to be 100% sure. From diagrams, it looks like you can reach everything except the smaller gear on the vertical shaft.. :( I will check shift cables for adjustment first, but I was getting a pretty hard "THUNK" intermittently and especially at higher rpms.

Thanks Racerone!!

Have you priced a complete gearset?
You are going to be shocked.
It appears that Evinrude has discontinued this gearset (maybe), but it can be had aftermarket.

Your best bet will be to find a good used LU.

You can call Joe Eby at Advanced Marine in Interlochen MI. 231-275-5859. He can advise very well.

Also....noticing how you are referring to the parts...."smaller gear on the vertical shaft"....no offence, but it sounds like the job is going to be a challenge to you. Shimming, pulling the propshaft carrier, torqueing the pinion nut, various special tools, tough job for a newbie.

At any rate, good luck.

If you're going to do this yourself, get an OMC Factory Service Manual. It will help you out with other problems you have on the motor also.

I have the gearset... been watching for awhile and got one NEW on eBay for $199... done alot of work on a '69 115 as well... was just hoping I could do it without droppin the LU... I knew the answer...LOL....was just HOPING!! :)

Yep. I haven't needed the FSM for this one yet...I bought it in 2009 freshly rebuilt... but it's time for the FSM now... LOL...

Thanks guys!!
