84 force 50hp hot

"I have been working with my buddy on his 84 50hp force 507F4A motor. It was an old salt water motor, and as you can imagine - every bolt breaks! We installed a new water pump and motor mounts and on the open river run it over heated. We found the over temp sensor broken in the case. It was flowing good water....why did it over heat? To add insult to injury... top cylinder is @ 120psi comp, and the bottom is @ 80psi. Is there some common problem I am missing or is it now just time to scrap it? The lower unit is in good shape, and it does run, just not as strong. Any suggestions?"

"Brian, could be alot of build

"Brian, could be alot of build-up in the water jacket causing the overheat (which can be dissolved using CLR or even vinegar). Or you could have a bad gasket that is causing both the overheat and low compression.

You do need to track down the cause of the low compression in the cylinder. Hopefully it is simply a head gasket. However, if it is a ring problem (or worse) the motor still may be worth working on. But you need to crack her open and try to determine what is wrong..."

"Thanks, found a used 88 power

"Thanks, found a used 88 power head - need to get a wiring schematic since the colors are different. The model # is 507x8d, anyone got any info."

"Brian, best to grab yourself

"Brian, best to grab yourself a Seloc's manual for Force - Andrew who runs this site sells them for 35 bucks (see the right of this screen).

Your 84 was built by Bayliner (US Marine) just after they bought what was left of Chrysler outboard.

The 88 was built by Merc (after their parent company bought Bayliner in 86) so it may be a combination of Merc and Chrysler parts...."

"Thanks, we tried to swap the ignition systems today.....guess what....the flywheel shaft is larger than the 84. back to ground zero. Anyone know where i can get a coil and ignition module set?"
