84 Evinrude 35hp tiller help

New member
New to this forum and have a 84 Evinrude 35hp tiller e35telcrr, would like to know if any other newer or better tiller handle would work or I could do some small rigging to make work, anything better than factory tiller handle if possible.
 
That tiller handle set up was used for 30+ years.-----Nothing wrong with it.----The newer tillers use a cable set up.-----Better ( lower cost ) at the factory.-----Not better for the home handy man.-----What is the issue with your handle?
 
Find a good one on E-bay.----I do not believe a complete newer style ( cable ) tiller is an easy swap onto your motor.
 
I have been wondering the same thing, I hate that it comes out at such an angle to port, it means if you use an extension you can't turn starboard.

Barring that issue, one thing you can do that makes life a bit better with these is get (or make) the throttle stop for the remote version of the engine. It mounts to the exhaust cover and provides a stop for the timing arm.
Then you back the idle adjustment all the way off at the bottom of the gears on the handle.

This made a big difference to me because of all the play everywhere in the old gears and stuff. It meant I had a hard time coming to idle, it kinda wandered. If you want i can take a pic next time i'm in the garage.
