84 40 hr bogs under loud

I have a 1984 40 hr. J40ecr. Runs great in the driveway on a garden hose, But put it in the lake and it bogs down. I've done the carb cleaning the gas is good the spark plugs are new. I know this is going to sound funny but I did find the red wire going to the starter was not on all the way.

Test compression and test for spark.--------Testing on a hose means nothing !

Did you remove carb & thoroughly clean it?Was fuel system cleaned from last year,lines, filters,fuel/water separator dumped&inspected for debris? Was new gas added to old?

I just bought the motor on Saturday. As for carbs Yes removed last night. The gas is fresh I;m doing a 50-1 mix. The filter in the motoe looks clean and nothing came out of the carbs when I dumped them out. Thank you

Did you manually clean the high speed jet carefully with a piece of single strand wire... the jet that's located horizontally in the bottom center of the float chamber, way in back of the drain screw? If not, do so.

I wonder how it ran so good on the driveway with a bad coil.

In the driveway it not under loud. It rêves up fine. Put it under loud then it would bog out. I know I'll never buy a boat motor tell I see it run in the water
