I have a wellcraft w/ a3.8 in it that starts and idles ok but when I put the throttle to it it falls on its face, the carb has been rebuilt by a reputable repair shop and run tested. I'm leaning twards the distributor! Plugs and wires are good. Anyone got an idea?

I would lean that way too - check the timing advance weights and springs underneath the points plate to make sure they are not all gummed up with 25 year old oil residue (common issue)
Then change the points while you are in there and gap and set with dwell meter and verify timing.

What's the lead-up to this issue? gradual loss of power? or bam, one day no power?, new-to-you boat?

New to me, haven't had in the water yet! Pulled the dist. And the points mount plate was loose, fixed it and got it all set and back in and timed, still the same, fairy nice idel at 700 or so smooth up to 1800 or so then falls on its face!

Compression is good ? Say it is then unplug the esa module try it. You may have to shut the engine off to shift out of gear. Just be aware.

Which 3.8 do you have? (ford or GM) when idleing have you connected a vacuum guage to the engine? This is a great site that explains how to use and read vacuum guage readings. http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/186.cfm have you checked for an exhaust restriction fuel pressure to the carb? A stretched timing chain can also cause this problem. hope this gave you a few ideals of where to look
