my lower unit stopped in the middle of the lake no forward or reverse any clues what I need to look for befor dropping the lower unit

I would think you have one of

I would think you have one of 3 things ------1 Is a broken driveshaft----- 2 stripped driveshaft / crankshaft splines---- 3 stripped gears.
