83 rude stator problems

"I recently purchased a 83 rud

"I recently purchased a 83 rude 140hp v4. This motor appears to be a very clean, low hour motor. The motor runs fine wot, but has a very rough idle/low speed.

I noticed drippings underneath the flywheel and the flywheel becomes as hot as the top of the block after a 20 minute run. The block and the flywheel are so hot you cannot hold your hand on them. The motor is peeing strong. I don't remember a flywheel getting that hot on my other motors.

Do you guys think it's just a bad stator causing the hot wheel and the rough low speeds?

I have checked compression and it is good. I am waiting to see what you guys think about the stator before I get into the carbs, spark, link & sync, etc.

If the drippings look like melted plastic, you should pull the flywheel and have a look. It should not get as hot as you have noticed.

The rough idle problem turned out to be a sheared key and a sync problem.
I learned a very important lesson. NEVER PUT ANTI-SEIZE ON A CRANKSHAFT/FLYWHEEL ASSEMBLY. The mechanic told me the extra lube interferes with the pressure fit and causes the flywheel to shear the key. He was right!

I am still going to replace the stator.
