"Hey guys I bought a 83 Sea Ray 197 SRV 5.7 OMC 800 with 413hrs on it for $2500 back in Jan.changed out all gear oils when I bought it home. Took to the lake for about an hour and checked the lower unit which has milky oil and metal flakes coming out of it now. I bought the book, but can I just remove the 4 bolts on lower unit and pull it out? I'm here in Las Vegas and only one shop left that will work on them. I want to take a peak inside to see how much damage there is. Would it just be better to by a rebuild for $1500 from GLM? The boat still shifts fine. Thanks Guys!!!"

four bolts and if mechanical shift the shift linkage (2 cover plate bolts/screws and two more on the linkage itself/ electric shift ??? I don't remember where that disconnects (30yrs ago)

wilky white means that it is leaking water via the prop or top seals - (impeller drive shaft seals).
If it shifts fine I'd drain it pull the seals and replace them. while you are in there replace the impeller (four housig bolts as I remember) since you have it off. make sure you get the water pickup tube reseated correctly - if correct it will only allow the lower unit to move back and forth about 1/2 to 1 inch.
Then fill and drain the lower unit agin to clean out any water residue.
Fill it with the proper omc lube and test run
check lube for water again shaft(s) may be worn to the point that the seals can't seal properly
If still a problem then fork over the $1500

"If you are going to do any disassembly of the outdrive, you take the drive off the boat first. like this:

Take the battery clear out of the boat before removing shift cable.
If you wreck the shift cable, you are in trouble. They are hard to find, even at the $500 some are asking.
Also get, and read a service manual.
Then you take the top off the exhaust housing and lift the upper gearbox out."

Hey guys fixed the milky oil p

Hey guys fixed the milky oil problem with a new seal kit. Took out to lake mead and 10 miles out of marina started to hear a loud clinking noise from the drive. Ildled all the back 10 miles which took 3 hrs! Boat shifts in and out gear just fine. It also does this when the boat is out of gear. Ithink its coming from between the drive and engine? Any thoughts guys? Thanks!

ball gears?

Have you been r

ball gears?

Have you been running the engine with the drive tilted up?

aside from that - check all 3 drive compartment oil levels

I had the trim tilt all the way down. This one has the select trim on it also. I was running about 30 mph at 3500 rpm and the trim about 1/4 of the way up. I'm taking to my boat shop on tuesday. He thinks it sounds like its in the gimble housing. i'll let you know what he says. I dont think its the ball gears. Thats the 1st thing I loooked at once I had it on the tralier. Plus they were replaced last year.
