82 mercruiser 470 wont start cranks and cranks just wont start . Ran fine it seemed until i ran it out of fuel now wont fire consistently. I checked fuel pump at carb and i am getting fuel. I am getting spark and rotation just wont start. Something i dont get is u can push throttle down and fuel sprays in carb but when ignition is on fuel will not spray in carb. I believe the problem is in the carb i just dont know where. Does this make sense to anyone??

The problem sounds like fuel. Get a can of spray starting fluid and give it a try. If the engine starts and dies then you have a fuel issue. If it doesn't you have an ignition problem.

When you increase the throttle the accelerator pump squirts fuel into the venturies. When the throttle setting is not changing you wont see raw gas. This is normal.

Mix up a mixture of motor oil and gas into a squirt can and try squirting that in when trying to start. 10 % oil should do it.

the gas/oil mix didnt seem to work anyone got anymore ideas? Other than spending a few hundred bucks for a new carb i have no clue what else to do.

...and i am getting fuel. I am getting spark and...

Perhaps there is insufficient spark. Is the distributor shaft worn w/too much play in the shaft? Maybe you should start w/the basics: new points, condenser and spark plugs.

try to pour some gas in the carb... if it doesn't start then it is ignition. My best bet would be complete spark plug change, then plug wires, then distributor.

I understand your enthusiasim but please dont start responding to random posts like this one with a similar motor to yours.

This post was started on 2011 and ended in 2011 with NO follow up by the owner of the boat so it is considered a dead post/topic..........

We also do not try to reccommend pouring gas as not all understand safe handling of chemicals in a boat!!.......just a word of caution...........

oh sorry man... just trying to recommend what worked for me. I guess he kind of gave up... ha. I know its not recommended to pour gas in the carb but hey sometime do what you gotta do.
