I have 81 v4 johnson 90hp, I had an issue with power and was told I had a bad coil, replaced one ,still had the proplem so replced the other three. Now it starts can get rpms up good but while idling it just shuts off like I turned the key. I also noticed that one side(head) is hot after running and the other is not, could this be the power pack? or bigger trouble?

One bank becoming hot and the other bank not... could be a faulty thermostat, possibly swollen water deflectors.

The shut down problem at idle could be a fouled carburetor causing a lean condition, the idle set too low... OR... a intermittent short of the ignition switch. To check the switch... remove the black/yellow wire from the "M" terminal. If this causes the shut down problem to cease, replace the switch.

If the engine has what sounds like a mild backfire just before it shuts down (lean condition), while it's idling, stick two fingers into the carburetor throats (acting as a manual choke), one at a time. If the engine suddenly smooths out and continues running, you've found the offending carburetor.

??----Are the orange wires on the correct coil ?----------Or try swapping the plug wires on the bank that is running cold.

Thank you guys! My fault I had one back wires crossed! Once joereeves said one wire had a blue stripe I was up at first light and found I did it wrong. Ran great after, hooked up (I live 2mins from the landing) and by 700am out on the water with the wife and dog. Thanks again!!!
