"After use, a chocolate brown

"After use, a chocolate brown fluid leaked from the area around the propeller nut holding the exhaust propeller of my 1981 johnson 9.9 outboard. Any suggestions as what is wrong and hoe to repair it?"

"After the engine has been sit

"After the engine has been sitting a few hours in the normal upright running position, find the large slotted drain screw in the lower unit skeg and loosen it.

Loosen it, better yet to slowly remove it so that a small amount of the gearlube will flow out.

If the gearlube looks normal (heavy normal looking oil) that sludge would be a substance draining down thru the inner exhaust housing and would have no bearing on the lower unit.

But if that gearlube looks the same as what you're describing, then I would assume that you have a faulty seal somewhere in the lower unit.

Let us know what you find."

"If you're running in cold

"If you're running in cold water, or running the engine for a short time, exhaust gases can condense in the tower and dribble out as a black/brown oily substance. This is exacerbated if you are running a richer than 50:1 mix."
