"I need to change the impeller on my 1981 johnson 7.5 hp as its not pumping water, does the lower unit come off like on a big motor or do I need to take the powerhead off?"

Shift rod simply pulls from the the mechanism at the top, although he drive shaft may be stuck in the splines in the crankshaft

BUT if its a longshaft take the extension off with it then remove the extension after cleaning up the shaft.

Check you can get a good flow of water through the engine with a hose connected to the water tube. Corrosion around the grommet at the top of the tube can cause problems! You do have to remove the powerhead as well to get at that!

While you are doing the pump impeller is a good time to replace the drive shaft oil seals.

lightly grease the splines on the drive shaft when rebuilding."
