"hey fellas.
i'm having a heck of a time here. i have a 1980 80hp mercury. when i got it last year, it was awesome. it wailed. lately i've been having issues with the power. the latest happened yesterday on the lake. and this has been happening for awhile. when we get on the water, it seems the engine will only give me about half the power. almost exactly...
i think has something to do with lower leg. the little lever that clicks on and off when you want to lift the engine for transporting. we were going along, at 50% power, getting very angry! so i put it in neutral and reved it up. sounded good. so put it in gear and at a little too high of an rpm and it took of like a rocket. on the way back, i tried the same thing...nothing. after going along at 50% for 15 minutes, she jumped back to life on her own. i have found adding a little more fresh gas (and cutting down the oil/fuel mixture) has worked. and wiggling the engine in both neutral and with the engine not running, but in gear...
i just changed the leg oil and found maybe a few tiny metal shavings. but it seems that a whole bunch of things seems to spring it back into life. i got the engine from the guy who bought it in 1980 and he took really good care of it. it looks brand new! when i changed the oil, i also changed the spark plugs and the next day it seemed to work great. but the very next time, same thing...it is really confusing. i can't really afford to go to a mechanic, yet.
any thoughts?
thanks"
