80 merc 9.8 ignition timing

1980 merc 9.8hp. Manual start.

So i decided to tighten up my throttle cables this past weekend. I also adjusted the screws for the throttle plate, so now the plate closes tighter down and is more closer to 180 degrees on wot.

So i set off this morning to go bed fishing and it took the outboard 3-6 pulls to start it up, compared to before my adjustments when it took pnly 1-2 pulls. When its up and running there are no noticeable problems when idling or at wot. Starts back up in 1 pull if outboard is still warm. If its cold, yes it takes 3-6 pulls.

Carb is clean, spark is good, compression is good. I am guessing that i might have messed up the ignition timing with the adjustments that ive made.

Anybody have a way for me to check this? Any other odeas are welcome and much appreciated

Most of those motors have this Mickey Mouse throttle linkage deal that limits the amount of gas you can give her in neutral. If you're intelligent like me (hah!) you can remove that stop (near the bottom of the carb) and give her a bunch more throttle to start up. (I suspect your adjustments messed that up somehow.)

The motor is so heavily flywheeled it doesn't rev to the moon easily, so if you idle speed guess was a bit too high, don't worry.

Haha! Definitely if I was as intelligent as you.
But I see what you mean. My normal start position must be different from before my adjustments.

So if possible, please explain how to remove that stop near the carb.
