"Hello all, i have a 79 or 80 model mariner 80 horse outboard that I am having trouble with. Last year, it would not run, so i rebuilt the carbs, and it ran better than it ever had before. Since then, it has sat for about a year, but I have occasionally fired it up for about 5 seconds to make sure it still ran. Today, i pulled it out, put the water jacket on it, and was going to run it for a while. It cranked up at first, but it was wanting to die on me. After dieing a few times, it will now not fire at all. I put new plugs in it, and i pulled the carbs, they are clean. It is getting spark, and im pretty sure its getting gas, but still nothing. I am really stumped. This thing ran so good last year. If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it."

"Clean the plugs, give it a shot of carb cleaner into the open carbs, and see it that does it. I start lots of stubborn motors that way.

"Humph! About all I can think of--and I've had this problem--is that some dirt got sucked in and is holding the reeds open. If so, the only way to cure that is to take the reed assemblies out and clean them--the dirt will NOT blow out on its own.
