8 hp Johnson...no spark

I have a J8SRLCDE that has no spark to either wire. Compression is 125 lbs both cylinders.

I get no spark at all on my tester or by grounding plugs. This is my first time with an ignition problem of this type so I am all ears....errrrr eyes. ;) My first thought was to pull the flywheel as there is no fire to either plug. Better to start with some good information though... what is the first thing to check?

This is better " the other forum" you were posting on is driving me nuts.. they said be patient when I complained... grrr!

If you disconnect the kill switch ground wire it will eliminate a possible faulty switch but youd have to check that the wires were not accidentally shorting to ground anywhere to be absolutely sre of things

Ok! Stuff to try. Both of the motors are doing the same thing...crazy.

Vic, the ground wire is the the one I mentioned on "the other site" that is grounded behind the coils?

Disconnect the black/yellow wire form the pulse pack and see what happens

I just realized I switched motors and only Vic knows it. LOL Boobie, same story...different motor. 86 15 hp Johnson...no spark. This picture won't help I guess.

Thanks racerone. I'm sure you are right on with your diagnosis. I still do want to buy a meter and learn to use it though. Would the one I linked to work to test components like the power pack?

Take a simple reading with an ohmeter on the charge coil and sensor coil.-That is good enuff to tell if they are good or bad !

Can anyone point me to some basic explanation of ignition components? A net source or a book. I would really like to understand these parts better so I can ask you guys (reasonably) intelligent questions about my motor. Kinda frustrating to not know the right questions to ask.
