79 Johnson throttle cable / linkage issue

original and new cable do the same thing
i ajust it as tight as it can go and still fit in the holding slot, but the linkage doesnt advance until the control box throttle is 3/4 of the way forward.
is there any way to make it catch instantly?

Second, is this start position in the correct spot? are the 2 lines supposed to be lined up with the pin in the center?

I can not see your motor, it does sound normal.----Throttle plates normally do not open fully until the last bit of forward motion of the handle.

It is but I've had it a few years. It wouldn't let me post a Post s pic.
The problem is it doesn't get gas when I put it in gear until the throttle is 3/4 forward, don't almost died then once it catches it revs high. There's no in between and I can't troll or go slow

I don't want to pay 300$ just for that. I can fix things, I just need to understand what the actual issue is.

117 both cylinders.

Gauge is correct. Motor runs great at full throttle. Just dies out until the throttle linkage catches.
